Course contents

The Programme includes research and training in the areas of linguistics, management, and cross-cultural communication, in general providing doctoral students with a significant knowledge of the influence of economic, legal, social, historical and cultural aspects in the relations between nations.

Research topics included in the Programme are supervised by a Joint Teaching Committee and are designed to highlight different perspectives of the relations between Europe and one or more emerging areas. The official language is English. Five positions are available, four of which carry scholarships (of which one is reserved for the Universidade Estadual da Paraíba) and one is without. The admission procedures and selection criteria are defined in a specific call for applications, published annually, usually between June and August. Public administration employees may apply for the PhD programme and, if accepted may then request academic leave of absence for the duration of the programme.

The academic approach of the Programme is grounded on the idea that a current understanding of global relationships between different cultures requires a cross-disciplinary perspective and a combination of both theoretical and applied research. Research topics included in the Programme are supervised by the Joint Teaching Committee and are designed to highlight different academic and methodological perspectives.

In particular, research topics include (but are not limited to) the following:
- Linguistic, sociolinguistic and pragmatic analysis of communication in the fields of business, economics, political science, social institutions, etc.
- Cultural diversity and its effect on intercultural communication;
- International business, cross-border transactions, and trade relations;
- Intercultural communication of human rights;
- Cross-cultural management and negotiation techniques in intercultural settings;
- International marketing;
- Global history, public management, and foreign policies;
- International political economy;
- Comparative history of economic cultures;
- The European economy in a historical perspective;
- International legal issues and their impact on bilateral and multilateral relations.

At the end of the Programme, doctoral students will be qualified for jobs in international business and organisations, including public institutions, supranational organisations, and multinational companies operating in Europe and/or in emerging countries. Upon completion of the Programme, former programme candidates may also be eligible for teaching and research positions in academia and other institutions of higher learning.

Examples of job functions include:

- Management of internal and external cross-cultural communication;
- Management of cross-border transactions and trade relations;
- Human resources and diversity management;
- Development of language strategies and strategic language solutions in communication units;
- Development of translation, language, and communication strategies in translation companies;
- Interpreting and translation management;
- Country analysis and cross-cultural segmentation of foreign markets;
- International marketing and sales management;
- Negotiation in an intercultural setting;
- Development of innovative language and communication solutions for intercultural marketing in export and marketing companies;
- Development of language and intercultural communication programmes;
- Teaching and research at universities or in higher secondary education.
