Course contents

The Doctoral Program in Architecture, Design and Planning aims to achieve the following objectives:
- To complete the scientific training of doctoral students, enabling them to independently develop new research, work, and consultancy activities with a higher level of expertise, both within and outside the academic area. It is assumed that future doctoral researchers, with their high qualifications, can contribute to the enrichment of society, benefiting everyone;
- Encourage cultural exchange among the different areas of interest that constitute the architectural discipline in its entirety, so that the fields of architecture (in the strict sense), design, urban planning, and environmental planning can mutually enrich each other through the exchange of topics, methodologies, and outcomes;
- To stimulate the continuous updating of individual disciplines, including through dialogue with external research institutions, both in Italy and internationally;
- To contribute to the advancement of knowledge and operational skills in the fields of architecture, design, and urban planning through the promotion of scientific production, both by the doctoral students and by the teachers affiliated with the academic board;
- To contribute to the dissemination of knowledge and competencies by collaborating with economic and administrative entities in the development of doctoral research projects;
- To contribute to the dissemination of knowledge and competencies at the societal level by promoting awareness of the activities carried out within the doctoral program among citizens, schools, and university courses.

The doctoral program aims to train independent researchers capable of actively contributing to the scientific and methodological advancement in the field of Architecture, Design and Planning. The program tries to enable students to acquire, over time, a significant position at the international level as scientists, intellectual, professionals, or entrepreneurs.
The doctoral graduate in Architecture, Design and Planning will be a highly skilled professional capable of working autonomously and competently in the field of academic research. They will also be equipped with to hold coordination and management roles in research institutions, public and private entities, and government administrations.
In these contexts, the doctoral graduate will be qualified to manage projects at different scales. They will contribute to the architectural field by defining theories, methods, and tools for interpreting and representing the complexity of design contexts. They will also work at the urban and territorial level, with a particular focus on the environmental dynamics that characterize development processes. Furthermore, they will engage with design and object-oriented approaches, aiming to identify innovative processes in strategic projects for managing complexity.
