Course contents

The present PhD programme aims at promoting the study of the cultural heritage of the Ancient world and, in particular, of the transmission of classical culture in its manifold themes and forms: the tradition of texts, documents and historical sources; the survival and recurrences of ancient art and literature; the evolution of writings and book forms.
Classical civilization has deeply influenced the development of the European cultural heritage by engaging a productive dialectic between continuity and innovation in different periods and contexts.
The PhD programme provides future scholars with highly specialized and up to date research tools and methods, in order to allow students to: 1) gain a thorough knowledge of both the material and conceptual dimensions of the transmission of the Classics; 2) understand and enhance the fundamental contribution of the Middle and Modern Ages in the process of acquisition and transmission of the Ancient culture. Although interdisciplinary, the programme is focused on a well-defined issue; it seeks to give specific methodological competences in the fields of palaeography and diplomatics, philology, critical analysis of literary texts and art works, historical, digital humanities, archeology and art historical sources. All such skills are necessary to a proper and solid research in the tradition, reception and interpretation of the ancients from the origins to our contemporary age.

Selection procedures and criteria for applicants to the 2 grants funded by the University and 5 grants funded by the DM 118 on specific thematic areas (1 on PNRR research topic, 1 on Digital Transition, 1 on Public Administration, 2 on Cultural Heritage) and funded are as follows: - written exam (max score 40 out of 100); - qualifications (max score 20 out of 100); - oral interview (max score 40 out of 100). Written exam. All candidates will be free to choose any one of the options listed below. On general topics: - translation of a piece of a poem or a prose text from Greek or Latin with comment; - transcription of one or more facsimiles from manuscripts or documents with historical, palaeographic and diplomatic comment; - composition on a philological topic: methods, issues, techniques, applications and critical history of texts; - composition on an art historical and archeological topic: methods, issues, history and critical analysis of works and artistic phenomena, chronological, iconographic, documentation and enhancement issues. On research topics PNRR: - edition and/or translation of a passage from a literary text from Greek, Latin, Romance languages with philological comment - ecdotic methodologies and practices of autograph or apograph signs and reading notes in the margins of latin medieval manuscripts: one or more cases of printed and/or digital editions - digital technologies and virtual musealization of archivist documents and books: some practical example - composition on museology and museography, consisting of the analysis and critical discussion of one or more case studies and best practices in the fields of conservation, promotion, management and/or accessibility - methodologies, technologies and scientific analyses in archaeometry and how to reconstruct contexts: possible results through sample cases and applications already published. On research topic Passucci Viaggi: - composition on archaeoanthropology and cultural turism. Candidates will have 4 hours for their written exam. Candidates must achieve the minimum score of 24 out of 100 in the written exam in order to be admitted to the oral interview. Oral interview. It will consist in: (a) discussion about the written exam; (b) discussion on the research proposal; (c) test of the methodological and disciplinary skills necessary for the realization of the project; (d) foreign language test: the candidate will be asked to read and translate a text in English, French or German. The list of the admitted candidates will be published on the Scuola Superiore website: https://www.scuolasuperiore.unich.it Foreign candidates can choose to be examined in one of the following languages: Italian, English, French, German. Candidates who choose to take their exam in English, French or German will have a supplementary Italian language test. For candidates who compete for the 5 grants funded by the DM 118 and 1 grant funded by Passucci Viaggi a supplementary oral interview is foreseen, which will be contextual to the other and will lead to a specific judgment of suitability. Selection procedures and criteria for applicants to the 1 grant funded by ERC-2020-ADG on the topic: "Graff-IT. Writing on the Margins: Graffiti in Italy, 7th to 16th century" are as follows: - qualifications (max score 40 out of 100); - interview (max score 60 out of 100). Candidates must achieve the minimum score of 24 out of 100 in the qualifications, in order to be admitted to the interview. Oral interview. It will consist in: (a) discussion on the research proposal on the specific topic; (b) test of the methodological and disciplinary skills necessary for the realization of the project; (c) foreign language test: the candidate will be asked to read and translate a text in English, French or German.
