Course contents

The general educational aim of the “History of Societies, Institutions and Thought. From
Medieval to Contemporary History” doctorate is uniform for all curricula, even though differing
themes and perspectives are explored depending on the specific area of interest.
The purpose is to train scholars and scholars capable of
- identify broad scientific problems in the historical and philosophical fields;
- design and conduct specific research within these areas or organically connected to
them;
- set up and position innovative and complex research;
- select and apply different methodologies suited to the research objectives;
- identify and competently use the necessary sources and critically analyze facts,
documents, works, themes, concepts, methods and contexts;
- identify and use the international bibliography;
- organize and display the collected material in a clear and controllable way;
- create a scientific text.
- Furthermore, through workshops and seminars, it is intended to support PhD students in
the development of the following personal and professional skills (within the scope of soft
skills):
- interacting with others, working in groups, knowing how to operate in open, multicultural
and flexible contexts;
- manage projects, taking into account the available resources, both material and nonmaterial;
- manage communication tools, dissemination of one's activities, speaking and presenting
oneself in public;
- knowing how to adapt and respond to environmental and work challenges;
- knowing how to define and manage one's own career path, with an eye always open to
new professional opportunities.

An Italian degree known as “Laurea specialistica/magistrale” or a degree awarded prior to approval of Ministerial Decree D.M. no. 509 of 3rd November 1999, as amended by D.M. no. 270 of 22nd October 2004 - awarded by 31st October 2023;
A foreign academic qualification - unless recognized as fully equivalent to an Italian degree - which is comparable for its duration, level and academic field to the Italian degree granting access to the PhD Course, and awarded by 31st October 2023.

Employment opportunities

The doctoral training should provide the PhD graduates with the skills that are needed not
only to pursue appropriate research activities in academia (historical and philosophical
research and teaching in Italian and foreign universities), at Italian or foreign school or in
public and private institutions, but also to hold positions of great responsibility in different
professional fields, that include the two macro-areas of culture and communication and
scientific-cultural planning:
- Culture and communication: publishing, cultural and scientific journalism, direction and
management of museums, libraries, archives and research centers, ministries, public
administration, associations and public and private institutions;
- Scientific-cultural planning: experts in European, cross-border, regional planning;
- Cultural and creative companies with high know-how.
