Course contents

Reuse and safeguarding of the contemporary heritage affect tens of millions of people in Europe and hundreds of millions around the world; affect the quality of life of citizens through where they live and where they develop their lives. Cities and urban environments in Europe should preserve their typology and identity and try to maintain their specific nature in comparison with other places in the world. They are realities that make Europe attractive and competitive and contribute to the well-being of its citizens.
Providing high-level qualification for future professionals and researchers focused on the safeguarding, conservation and reuse of 20th century urban and built heritage is the overarching goal of the 90 ECTS "Architectural and Urban Contemporary Heritage-ARURCOHE" Erasmus Mundus Joint Master to be jointly implemented by the Official and Associated Partners.

ARURCOHE Programme includes compulsory physical mobility for all enrroled students (scholarship holders or not) consisting of a minimum of two study periods (two Blocks) in two countries. These two countries must be different from the country of residence of the student at enrollment stage. All Master programme study periods (Blocks) must take place in the official partners, or under their direct supervision. Compulsory mobility periods cannot be replaced by virtual mobility (online learning).
The first block take place in San Sebastian, Spain, the second block take place in Torino, Italy and for the third block the students can choose between Torino and Kaunas.
The faculty of Architecture of Porto-Portugal (FAUP) offers to host those italian and spanish students of the Path 1 in the Master Dissertation period to ensure the geographical conditions of mobility.

Other educational requirements
The ARURCOHE Programme is open to holders of an official higher education degree from one or more universities in the field of architecture, civil engineering, urban planning or similar. Applicants are expected to have a higher education degree according to the following criteria: successful completion of a 5-year (300 ECTS) university study program (Graduated architects, urbanists, civil engineers, architectural engineers and similar) associated to a Regulated Profession.

Note: "Regulated Profession" is defined as a professional activity or group of professional activities, access to which, the pursuit of which, or one of the modes of the pursuit of which is subject, directly or indirectly, under legislative, regulatory or administrative provisions to the possession of specific professional qualifications; in particular, the use of a professional title limited by legislative, regulatory or administrative provisions to holders of a given professional qualification shall constitute a mode of pursuit.

ARURCOHE Programme ensures to undertake a selection process in a fair, transparent, coherent and documented way, in line with the provisions of its contract with the European Commission and within the ECHE Charter. A) Selection procedure (costs free) starts through the Contact page and inscription. B) Applicants will send a copy of the identity card/passport, certificate of country of residence, the academic scores and where were achieved, the Curriculum Vitae, reference letters and the languages knowledge. Complementary information will be considered. It is mandatory to make mention of the selected Path where the Master Dissertation will be placed. All the documentation will be addressed through the "Contact page and inscription" page in an unified file (".pdf" format) . C) Each one of the three members of the Academic Committee (excluding the Programme Director) will assess numerically all the applicants by using the following evaluation criteria and weighted score: Academic performance Student Transcripts: 30% Curriculum Vitae: 30% Motivation letter and previous experience ARURCOHE related: 15% Recommendation/references: 15% Other merits: 10% The maximum evaluation will be 100 points. For each applicant, the maximum and minimum evaluation will be eliminated considering as definitive punctuation the middle of the three numerical punctuations. Academic scores will be evaluated following the European Qualifications Framework National Coordination Points-EQF18 NCPs. In ex aequo cases, priority will be given to the highest scores for "Curriculum Vitae" and then "Academic performance". D) Ranked list. Depending on the score obtained, a single list of applicants will be built. An Excel file has been programmed to meet the Erasmus+ Programme geographical balance. Only the name of the applicants, the country of residence, the selected Path and the three punctuations from the Academic Committee have to be encoded by hand. Through different algorithms and iterations, the Excel file detects the middle punctuations and organizes the scores in descendent order. The algorithm will identify: 1.- To be awared scholarships. The 12 top-ranked applicants from the EU Member States and from the Third Countries Associated with the Programme and the 6 top-ranked applicants from targeted countries (NDICI and IPA III countries). No more than 10% of the total number of scholarships awarded during project implementation (five editions) should be awarded to candidates from the same nationality (this rule does not apply to scholarships from NDICI and IP III countries). 2.- The number of applicants in total by selected Path in Master Dissertation. 3.- The rest of the applicants ordered by punctuation (proposed for non-scholarships). E) Initial selection procedure. The 12 top-ranked applicants from the EU Member States and from the Third Countries Associated wth the Programme; and the 6 top-ranked applicants from targeted countries (NDICI and IPA III) will be proposed for ARURCOHE Programme scholarships. The next 8 top-ranked applicants will be proposed as non-scholarships. These 26 applicants agree with the geographical conditions of the Erasmus+ Programme being total or partially funded by the Erasmus+ Programme. Finnaly the next 4 top-ranked applicants will be proposed as aditional non-scholarships (self-funded in full). A final consideration is about the number of students by Path in the Master Dissertation (in order to reach a similar number of students in each Path). For the first 26 applicants (escholarships and non-scholarships), the 13 top-ranked in a Path will be respected; those worst scored on this Path will be contacted by phone and/or email to modify their choice at the another Path. The selected Path of the sel-funded in full students will be respected.

For each edition of the ARURCOHE Programme scholarships can be offered to the 18 best scored students in the selection process from all over the world. However, consortia should ensure geographical balance: 12 of these students must be residents of the Programme Countries or the Third Countries Associated with the Erasmus+ Programme (see https://erasmus-plus.ec.europa.eu/programme-guide/part-a/eligible-countries) and the remaining 6 must be from NDICI or IPA III countries. No more than 10% of the total number of scholarships awarded during project implementation (five editions) should be awarded to candidates from the same country of residence (this rule does not apply to scholarships from NDICI and IP III countries).

The residence country of scholarships over the whole programme (five editions) is as follows: 45 Programme Countries, 15 Third Countries Associated with the Erasmus+ Programme, 3 IPA III countries (Instrument for PreAccession Assistance) and 27 NDICI countries (Neighbourhood, Development and International Cooperation - Global Europe Instrument) for a total of 90 scholarships (18 by edition). ARURCOHE Programme funds each enrolled scholarship with 1.400 €/month. The scholarship will be a contribution to the costs incurred by the beneficiary students and shall cover travel, visa, installation and subsistence costs. It is calculated on the basis of a monthly unit cost for the entire period needed by the enrolled scholarship holder to complete the study programme. This period covers study, research, placement activities, Master Dissertation preparation and defence, in line with the requirement of ARURCOHE Programme. During this period, the scholarship can only be awarded in full, and to full-time students.

Employment opportunities

The master aims at providing high-level qualification for future professionals and researchers focused on the safeguarding, conservation and reuse of 20th century urban and built heritage.
The students at the end of the programme will be able to cover differnt role in both public and private institutions working for the safeguarding, conservation and reuse of urban and architectural cultural heritage.

Notes
The Master Dissertation will be co-directed by two professors of different partners. Its preparation in teams of a reduced number of students of different origins and academic background will be encouraged. The Master Dissertation will come within, or include, several of the following scenarios:

1.- Contribute to the contemporary architectural register.
2.- Create the conceptual framework that contextualises, in historic and social terms, the manifestations of contemporary architecture and cultural heritage overall.
3.- Fostering research studies in the field of conservation methodology and techniques for this specific heritage.
4.- Fostering research transfer activities in the field of contemporary heritage (spin-offs).
5.- Fostering the protection of contemporary cultural heritage under sustainability criteria.
6.- The study of new protection strategies.
7.- Policies and investments for the conservation of modern heritage assets.
8.- Disseminate examples of good practice in the preservation and reuse of modern heritage.
