Course contents

The Doctoral Programme in Sociology aims at forming highly qualified researchers able to do both applied and fundamental research in Universities and scientific research centres or market research institutes.
In particular, the Programme aims to educate professionals that will be able to apply their knowledge in an interdisciplinary fashion, based on the education they acquire during this post-graduate Programme in the various areas covered by the Department of Sociology and Social Research.
To this aim, the training programme aims to enhance the study of the sociological theory.
Students are encouraged to confront themselves with theories, approaches and methodologies of all social sciences.
The main qualitative and quantitative research techniques as well as data analyses are explored.

Upon hearing the Doctoral Programme Committee, the Rector appoints the Admissions Committee. It consists of at least three members chosen among Italian and foreign professors and researchers, who are experts in the scientific areas of the Doctorate. The Committee may also include up to two experts, even foreign, of public and private national and international research organizations. There is a pre-selection phase composed by two parts: I. Qualifications assessment and evaluation of the research project according to art. 4 of the call; access to the second pre-selection part depends on the results of this first part of the evaluation procedure; II. multiple choice test to assess the basic knowledge of the candidates on theoretical and methodological approaches and issues in sociology social research. The selection phase will be conducted by interview in English in order to assess the candidate’s theoretical and methodological competences, research skills and their motivation. The interview also aims at evaluating the coherence of the candidates’ research interests as presented in the submitted research proposal with their curriculum vitae et studiorum. If no English certificate at least level C1 has been provided in the application, the candidate’s English knowledge will be tested during the interview. Candidates who intend to compete also for potential topic-specific grants, made available after this call's publication, must express their intention to the Admissions Committee before the qualifications are assessed. Those candidates will be evaluated on their knowledge of the specific subject matter(s) of that grant. A candidate’s request to allocate an eventual topic-specific grant implies that candidate’s preference for the specific scholarship above all other grants. For the interview the Admissions Committee has an overall score of 100 points available. To be admitted in the overall ranking candidates shall score at least 60/100. The list of the candidates admitted to the interview and the final ranking will be published at the selection’s webpage. The written test may take place in one of two options (at the candidate's choice): a) at the University of Trento. Applicants are requested to show a valid ID document before the interview begins. Should the candidate fail to attend the exams for whatever reason this will be considered as renunciation of participation in the selection procedure. The multiple-choice test will be carried out through the use of computers made available at the Department of Sociology. b) by videoconference by using audio-video connection devices that allow the correct identification of the participants (by webcam) and the carrying out of the exams in public. The starting time of the exams will be scheduled by the Commission. Candidates must provide the same identification document attached to the application form. Failure to participate on the day or at the appointed time, or not providing ID documents will result in exclusion from the competition. The University accepts no responsibility in the case of technical problems that do not guarantee the proper conduct of the exams. Further technical information will be provided in due time by the doctoral secretariat. Information regarding the date, time and place (University of Trento, if in presence) at which the test will be held will be provided at least 20 days prior to the date of the interview on the selection’s webpage. Any changes to the date of the exams will be published on the same website.
