Course contents

The PhD programme in Architecture and Project Cultures brings together, with an interdisciplinary intent, the specificities that characterise the different project cultures and that include architectural composition, town planning, history of architecture, aesthetics, industrial design, design and survey, restoration, technology, technical architecture and technical physics, as well as economic and strategic evaluation.
Basic research is combined with applied research in a training perspective that is open to both the academic and professional worlds, where research is based on the in-depth study of specific disciplinary themes and problems that can find enrichment and synergy from the different disciplines present in the PhD course.
The research activity is developed according to thematic areas that, considering the nature of the PhD course, are mainly addressed to graduates in architecture, building-architecture engineering, design and to graduates who, although coming from other degree courses, intend to develop specific studies in the field of Architecture and project cultures according to the different disciplinary articulations that characterise them. The Doctorate places interdisciplinarity at the centre of its training project, implemented through the implementation of scientific collaboration relationships with the various social and economic components operating at different scales: from the building scale to the urban and metropolitan scale, from the regional scale to the international scale. In this sense, strong connections have been developed thanks to the participation in European competitive projects (e.g., Horizon Europe, Creative Europe, Erasmus+, etc.) of the Department of Architecture with both national and foreign university partners (e.g., Politecnico di Torino, Norwegian University of Life Sciences, Savonia University of Applied Sciences, University of Plymouth,and Universitat Politècnica de València). The network of relations that the Doctorate establishes with the territory is made up of several components, ranging from relations with companies in the creative sector to the construction sector, companies specialised in heritage protection, up to institutions and public bodies with administrative, heritage management and cultural promotion functions, and finally with associations and stakeholders actively involved in the territory. Among the research organisations that are part of these collaborations are: Tecnalia ES, Cartif ES; while on valorisation topics in the areas of Cultural Heritage, Landscape Assesment, Ecosystem Services, Responsible Research and Innovation, the strategic relationship with UNESCO favours a broader and more complete vision of the various lines of investigation. Facilitating and promoting this synergy is helped by the careful planning of moments of dialogue between the various components inside and outside the academy through workshops, in-depth seminars, and study days in which the PhD students are the protagonists. A further component of the PhD programme consists of an articulated network of exchanges and relations with foreign universities - as witnessed also by the foreign members of the Board of Lecturers - that contribute to enriching and enhancing the issues addressed, in terms of research and skills acquired, with punctual exchange and thesis activities developed in the form of co-tutorship (e.g. RWTH Aachen, TUM München, Univ. Paris-Est, Universität Politécnica de Valencia, University of Copenhagen, UCL Louvain).
The doctoral students' training pathway envisages the performance of teaching and research activities, articulated over the three years according to operational phases that include not only personal research and periodic meetings with the Board of teachers aimed at verifying the progress of individual work, but also the organisation of and participation in dissemination activities, such as: workshops, courses, seminar cycles, conferences, exhibition activities, publishing activities.
For each doctoral student the College identifies the most suitable complementary educational activities with respect to the theme of the thesis. The doctoral student is also encouraged to carry out internships or research periods at national bodies, international organisations, European institutions and foreign universities.

Employment opportunities

The professional outlets are directly linked to research activities in the field of architecture and design cultures with particular reference to the fields described here in general terms: Architectural Composition; Urban Planning; Building Systems Technology; Advanced Design; Heritage Restoration/Conservation; Representation of Cultural Heritage in the Digital Age; History of Architecture; Aesthetics of Design and Architecture; Esthetics and Evaluation.
A substantial number of PhDs are employed at Italian universities with research grants and RTD A, RTD B and RTT positions. Many PhDs are engaged in professional and research activities in Italy and abroad. The recent ALMALAUREA survey on the employment status of PhDs at the University of Bologna one, three and five years after their degree shows that, from a comparison by prevailing CUN area of the course and across the three surveys as a whole, the employment rate at one one, three and five years after graduation, never falls below 85% In the last three years there has been an increase in the number of PhDs in employment (100%) as a result of obtaining a doctorate, with an average time of around 3 months from the start of the job search to entry into the labour market. There is a considerable number of PhDs employed on a permanent basis in the Ministry of Culture offices and in various national offices.
