Course contents

MULTIDISCIPLINARY AND TRANSDISCIPLINARY VOCATION. The doctoral course is aimed at the multidisciplinary acquisition of high historical-critical-philological skills in the field of visual arts, cinema, music, theater and new media, with particular attention to the transversal issues related to the conservation, transmission and enhancement of artistic and cultural heritage, as well as to the acquisition of high methodological skills in the field of research, not only at university level.

SPECIFIC AND TRANSVERSAL OBJECTIVES. In relation to the broad multidisciplinary spectrum examined – further expanded, in the new Doctorate in "Arts, history, society", to historical, sociological and semiotic sciences understood as investigative tools to support the Arts – the specific training objectives aim to allow each individual doctoral student the possibility of best declining their research project, after having agreed it with the Teaching Board, in relation to one or more disciplinary areas transversally pertaining to the doctoral course, so as to achieve results not only of a high scientific level, but also functional to a profitable insertion in the professional field.

NEW METHODOLOGIES FOR A NEW LABOR MARKET. In this direction, alongside the improvement of traditional methodologies, the need has developed to provide skills in the areas of communication and marketing of culture, as well as to identify training paths of applied research, such as to favor an employment response not only academic or sectoral research, but also in relation to diversified market realities and not necessarily linked to the cultural sector. In view of an increasingly competitive insertion in the job market, the course gives particular importance to the IT and digital approach, as a vector of knowledge and stimulus towards a dynamic intertwining of knowledge, also as a consequence of the most recent openings towards Artificial Intelligence and the study of Big Data that characterizes some of the restricted-theme scholarships announced for the 39th cycle and now also for the 40th cycle.

The professional profile aimed at by the Doctorate in “Arts, History, Society” can find outlets in numerous fields related to advanced research and artistic and cultural production. In particular, the following are highlighted:
- access to research and teaching in the academic field;
- advanced research activities in public bodies (Ministries, Regions, Municipalities), foundations and private entities;
- teaching in Universities, in Conservatories of music and Academies of fine arts, dance, drama, as well as in secondary schools;
- placement in prestigious public and private cultural institutions, with responsibilities at the planning, organizational and management level;
- curation activities in cultural, exhibition, performance and editorial events and manifestations (art exhibitions, musical concerts, theatrical performances, film festivals, and related publications, etc.);
- wide-ranging cultural industry, with particular attention also to promotion and marketing;
- freelance profession in the cultural field (production, promotion and research);
- support activities for entrepreneurship in the visual arts, entertainment and media (radio, television, internet, etc.).

New and additional professional opportunities are objectively foreseeable following the expansion of the Scientific Disciplinary Sectors (SSD) that – as indicated above – characterizes this new Doctorate in “Arts, History, Society” compared to the previous Doctorate in “Visual, Performing and Media Arts”, of which it is a substantial expansion. The new doctoral course, active for a few months, will highlight over time which additional professional figures can materialize within it, in close relationship with the nature of the projects and the type of students who will emerge during the next doctoral cycles.
