Course contents

The Course is aimed at training individuals capable of carrying out research activities independently, both in academia and industry, and managerial activities. In this sense, each doctoral student in the doctoral course is expected to produce original, relevant, and significant results, either in the form of scientific publications or the production of software or innovative applications, in one or more of the following areas:
- Distributed systems and distributed algorithms
- Programming languages and systems
- Computer networks and applications
- Software methodologies and engineering
- Formal methods and semantics of programming languages
- Artificial intelligence
- Real-time and fault-tolerant systems
- Parallel algorithms and probabilistic algorithms
- Image processing
- Bioinformatics and biometric systems
- Information systems and databases
- Competition theory
- Security
- Logical foundations of computer science
- Multimedia systems.

Upon completion of their studies, doctoral students, in addition to being experts in the state of the art related to their doctoral thesis, will also be able to communicate with other researchers on related topics, participate in innovative international projects, and identify and validate the practical and technological impact, if any, of their research. They will also be able to collaborate on the teaching of academic tracks where specific disciplinary expertise is required.
The course can accommodate a high number of doctoral students, given the quality of the Doctoral College, the fact that it is the reference doctorate for a department (Computer Science) that is numerous and present on 3 sites (in Bologna and Cesena), the established relationships of the members of the College and more generally of the members of the Department of Computer Science with the industrial world.

Employment opportunities

The PhD course in Computer Science and Engineering aims at the preparation of professionals able to autonomously develop activities related to scientific research and innovation, both in an academic and an industrial context, as well as management of ICT projects both in Italy and abroad. These activities require the following competencies: the skills for coordinating research activities in an academic context or within international research institutions; the competence for proposing and then developing projects consisting in the realization of ICT systems, possibly in an interdisciplinary context, appropriate for an innovative industrial environment; the ability to interact and possibly collaborate with researchers of other national or international companies and institutions. The main expected employments are the academic career both in Italy and abroad; research activity at both companies or institutions, both in the private and the public sector; and the management of industrial ICT projects. Additional opportunities include other activities like consultant, an expert in technological transfer, and the spin-off of highly technological companies in the ICT context.
