Course contents

The Doctorate in Cardio-Nephro-Thoracic Sciences is divided into pathways relating to Cardiology and Paediatric Cardiology, Cardiac Surgery and Paediatric Cardiac Surgery, Nephrology, Urology, Pneumology, Interventional Pneumology and Thoracic and Transplantation Surgery. At the end of the three-year course, the PhD student must be able to express a high professional level consistent with the pathway and direction pursued (clinical, basic and translational research). General training objectives are - introduction to the methodology of basic, clinical and translational scientific research - the acquisition of the methodologies of bibliographic research, data base construction, statistical data processing, processing and interpretation of big data - the acquisition of special laboratory techniques in the context of defined research projects - the acquisition of modern IT aids to research and communication - the knowledge of the rules of medical ethics in basic and clinical research - the knowledge of how to structure a research protocol and how to apply it in the field of care.

Employment opportunities

The Doctorate in Cardio-Neuro-Thoracic Sciences (SCNT), since its creation in 1984, has set as its basic principle the training of future Italian researchers in facilities of the Alma Mater and in synergy with facilities in other Italian, European and non-European cities.
The title of Researcher (PhD) in SCNT has a broad vision of professional outlets that are not limited only to a university career, as this Course was originally conceived. The same colleague who obtains a PhD has, for more than a decade now, outlets in alternative professional fields such as: University Researcher in clinical SSD; Medical Executive in university clinical OU; Medical Executive in hospital OU; Researcher in laboratories or public or private institutions; Research Assistant in public or private institutions.
The trait de union between past and present are the National and International Collaborations of the Teachers' Board where, in the last three Doctorate cycles, 100% of the Doctorate's activity has been in the field of intersectoral/interdisciplinary and international innovation. In the last year, two National Operational Programme grants were also obtained in collaboration with two well-known National and International Industries for the production of important diagnostic-therapeutic instruments.
The employment of colleagues who have obtained a PhD in Cardio-Nephro-Thoracic Sciences has been over 90% in the last three years, making the programme capable of attracting several candidates each year, not only from Emilia-Romagna, but also from National, European and Extra-European levels.
This is due to the high standard of training provided to the doctoral candidate through the tutors of Hospital-University and Laboratory facilities in Bologna, National and International who participate in the growth of the research programme.
