Course contents

The objectives of the PhD in Surgical Sciences and Innovative Technologies are to provide solid scientific knowledge and methodological skills in basic, clinical and applied research, which fall within the area of Medical and Surgical Sciences and Innovative Technologies. The PhD aims to train a researcher able to independently design and conduct research in the preclinical and clinical medical fields. The PhD student will be included in a training course aimed at providing autonomy in formulating questions and hypotheses, planning research designs, rationalizing constructs and variables and finally choosing the appropriate data analysis, with the ultimate goal of increasing the validity and reliability of conclusions and reducing the possibility of inferential bias. Particular emphasis will be placed on the possibility of acquiring knowledge and making use of innovative technologies, and methods to facilitate the implementation of this knowledge in clinical practice will be promoted.
Within the 4 major research themes of the Doctorate, which reflect the research activity of the Professors of the Board and the Tutors of the doctoral students, several interdisciplinary projects are developed, related to basic research, biomolecular research, creation and application of innovative technologies in the medical (steroidomics and metabolomics), and surgical (microinvasive/endoscopic surgery, creation of 3D virtual models of anatomical portions) field, bioengineering, clinical research, study of psychological mechanisms in the medical field.
To achieve these goals, a board of professors is proposed in which transversal skills are represented in the disciplines underlying the research topics covered by the doctorate. Furthermore, for several years, the professors belonging to the Doctorate have been collaborating with each other and with the most qualified national and international Departments, integrating the different theoretical, methodological and clinical skills.

The PhD in Surgical Sciences and Innovative Technologies selects and trains candidates with excellent professional potential.
The training given can be used to reach top positions in public (such as universities and IRCCS) and private research institutions, but also in international organizations, in health and pharmaceutical companies, in medical device industries, in Italy and abroad.
In particular, PhDs in Surgical Sciences and Innovative Technologies can aspire to university positions in the fields of medical-surgical sciences, biotechnology, bioengineering, behavioral sciences, in clinical and pharmacological research centers, in medical material industries. In addition, the skills and teachings learned by the PhD represent an added value for high level clinical practice, both in the public and private sectors.
The 2023 AlmaLaurea report (https://www2.almalaurea.it) shows that among the 2020 PhDs in Surgical Sciences and Innovative Technologies, interviewed one year after obtaining the degree, the employment rate is 100%. 83.3% of PhD students started working within 1 year of obtaining their doctorate. The remaining 16.7% continued the work they had started before obtaining their doctorate.
