Course contents

The PhD in Global Histories, Cultures, and Politics promotes research activities on the global dimension of socio-historical phenomena. The global is not understood here as a mere adoption of an enlarged geographical scale, but as an epistemological device that orients the study of the present and the past. Globalisation is configured as a set of processes shaped by political, social, and economic forces within an interplay between transnational and local dimensions. Therefore, the study of such processes requires a multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary approach capable of shedding light on their complexity. History, area studies, oriental studies, anthropology, geography, political theory, and the history of political thought represent the main disciplinary axes of the PhD in order to analyse both spaces and socio-historical phenomena traversed by transnational flows of people, ideas, and goods. In this framework, specific attention is paid to non-Eurocentric perspectives of thought that allow us to grasp the limits of Western grand narratives and to valorise approaches from the debate of cultural studies, postcolonial studies, feminist political theory and gender studies.
The training and research activities of the PhD are qualified and characterised by:
- the redefinition of the spatial arrangements of the humanities and socio-political sciences
- the study of phenomena of intercultural contact/conflict
- the analysis of the genesis and transformation of political, social, and cultural phenomena from a global point of view
- the affirmation and critique of rights in connection with the redefinition of subjectivities and identity-building processes
- a rethinking and renewal of specific disciplinary traditions and their analytical categories in order to develop innovative conceptual and methodological perspectives
- the assumption of a multilinear, non-progressive, and non-cumulative conception of temporality
- the interweaving of different scales of analysis combined with the use of comparative and transnational methodologies
- the attention to the intertwining of the conceptual and empirical dimensions of historical, philological, social, geographical, and anthropological research
- the focus on the relationship between technological development and environmental issues.
Each doctoral student is assigned a supervisor who follows and guides his/her research and training path. Generally speaking, the doctoral program includes an initial period in which the doctoral student investigates the state of the art relating to his or her subject of study, contacts researchers and institutions at national and international level and, if necessary, redefines his or her research project. This first phase is preparatory to the realisation of a research project that aims to achieve original and innovative results. In the last phase, the doctoral student must engage in the writing of his or her thesis and the presentation of the results of his or her studies. During the three years, the research work is supported by a compulsory training course to be defined with the supervisor on the basis of the criteria established by the course. In addition, doctoral students must spend at least six months studying abroad. Through the lecturers of the college, the PhD offers access to a number of international research networks in order to foster advanced training that is open and international in scope.

The research and training are organised to train people with solid thematic and/or area-based skills in the fields of study and according to the approaches that characterise the PhD course. At the same time, the course provides transversal skills and competences that can be spent in a variety of work contexts and facilitate the assumption of apical, coordinating, and managerial roles. According to the monitoring of the employment and professional outlets of PhD graduates who completed cycles 33, 34 and 35, 94 % of PhD graduates found employment within six months after graduating, mainly through research grants or scholarships in the thematic areas of the PhD course. On average, the PhD graduates rated the usefulness of their doctoral program positively in terms of the employment opportunities they achieved and the level of internationalisation of their careers.
