Course contents

The PhD program in Human Biology and Medical Genetics aims to provide excellent training in integrated and advanced topics of cellular and molecular biology and medical genetics. PhD students receive in-depth experimental training, including both basic research and its applied aspects in various fields of cellular physiology and pathology and medical genetics, also in reference to the diagnostic definition of complex clinical conditions. The primary objective is to train young researchers by inserting them into innovative research projects of high scientific value, encouraging them towards a rigorous, independent, critical and creative attitude. A strong point of the training is the integration of wet-lab and computational biology experiences, for the training of researchers capable of consciously managing both the design/realization of complex experiments and the subsequent analyses with computational tools, in the field of research and diagnostics in medical genetics. PhD students, simultaneously with experimental training, can deepen their theoretical knowledge through adequate consultation of scientific literature and critically discussing the results of their research activity in weekly seminars and annual presentations, frequently held in English. Furthermore, several interdisciplinary seminars and theoretical and practical courses are offered to PhD students within the BeMM (Molecular Biology and Medicine) doctoral school. PhD students are encouraged to participate in national and international conferences or courses, having an individual budget made available by the doctoral course. The primary objective is also to provide the skills to finalize their work to the production of scientific publications in highly prestigious journals. Another objective of this course is internationalization promoted through the encouragement to attend laboratories abroad for continuous periods. Furthermore, during the course, foreign professors are invited to hold lectures, seminars and courses. The PhD in Human Biology and Medical Genetics is divided into two curricula: 1) Human Biology: addresses the study of topics of molecular and cellular biology, with an approach aimed at understanding the mechanisms of cell functioning, differentiation, proliferation and transformation and their application in various fields of human physiology and pathology. 2) Medical Genetics: deals with the study of molecular defects underlying genetic diseases through the application of NGS and cytogenomic sequencing technologies, and functional studies. Particular interest is directed to the transfer of such knowledge in genetic counseling for a correct clinical assessment, for prognosis and follow-up, and for possible prevention and therapeutic programs.

Oral interview The oral examination will consist of two parts: (1) Presentation of a research project: the candidate is required to present a project that is consistent with the research areas of the PhD program in Human Biology and Medical Genetics. The evaluation will be based on knowledge of the state of the art, originality and innovative content, clarity, and completeness of the presentation of objectives, methodologies, and potential results, feasibility of the project, relevance of the project to the educational objectives of the PhD program. It is emphasized that a written project should NOT be submitted, and the presentation does not involve the use of a computer; (2) Skills assessment: the candidate will be asked questions related to basic knowledge of cellular/molecular biology and general/medical genetics, acquired technical skills, and the ability to master them. At the end of the oral examination, an English language proficiency test will be conducted, which will involve reading and translating a paragraph from an article in English on a topic related to the themes of the PhD program. language ITALIANO
