Course contents

The PhD in “Communication, Markets and Society” offers an innovative interdisciplinary, multidisciplinary and internationally oriented course, which enhances the knowledge developed in the disciplinary areas that study the nature of communication processes and business communicative processes, brand and media management considering the social and technological environment, as well as the evolutionary dynamics taking place in different business sectors and markets. Offering a broad view of fundamental knowledge in the various scientific-disciplinary areas, the PhD emphasises quantitative, qualitative and behavioural research methods. It adopts a research approach that is not only basic, but also applied, with the possibility of carrying out field projects thanks to the continuous collaboration with the IULM Research Centres/Observatories and many partnerships with external institutions and companies, both in Italy and abroad. Therefore, this doctoral path prepares professionals who want to pursue both an academic career and a working path in the corporate world. The PhD course is characterised by lectures, workshops, seminars, also focused on the development of soft skills for Phd Career Development. In addition to common activities, doctoral students have the opportunity to combine customised activities consistent with their research topics and aligned with their professional development goals.
Considering the transdisciplinary and multidisciplinary vocation of the course allows doctoral students to work on highly innovative projects developed in the field of communication, markets and society, the main lines of research of the course can be summarised as follows:
- the role of environmental and social sustainable development in communication processes, market dynamics, consumption and production practices, business management activities and the social context;
- the social, consumption dynamics of communication activities, also through the use of neuroscientific techniques;
- digital, social and AI transformation and their impact on communication, markets and society;
- entrepreneurial development and the start-up phenomenon, also with reference to communication processes.

Due to the expertise developed in the University's research centres and by the professors who are members of the Academic Board, research proposals focused on sectors such as tourism, the cultural and creative industries will be appreciated, always with particular reference to the intersection between business dynamics, communication and the analysis of socio-cultural trends.

The notice of admission to the XLI cycle of PhD courses for the academic year 2025/2026 expires on 10 July 20252023 at 12.00 noon (Italian time) The admission examination consists of an oral test preceded by the evaluation of qualifications and publications; the result of the evaluation will be published on the University website together with the dates of the test, which will take place at IULM University in Milan.
