Summary of the Course of study

The Master’s Degree in Biotechnologies of Human Reproduction (LM-9), offered by the Department of Molecular and Developmental Medicine, aims to train highly specialized professionals in the field of medically assisted reproduction by providing both theoretical and practical knowledge delivered entirely in English. English is used during lectures, practical internships, assessments, and the thesis discussion. Proficiency in English is crucial to enable graduates to engage with the international academic community and access high-level scientific literature, which is predominantly published in English.

Educational Objectives
The program equips students with specific biotechnological skills for handling, culturing, and cryopreserving gametes and embryos. It also trains them in performing first, second, and third-level techniques of Medically Assisted Reproduction (MAR) and managing specialized laboratories dedicated to assisted reproduction and biological banks for the cryopreservation of reproductive cells and tissues. These activities require a high level of expertise and highly specialized skills.
The course addresses all aspects of human reproduction with a multidisciplinary approach and offers a scientific context enriched by a highly qualified teaching staff, including Italian and international experts. The program leverages innovative infrastructures and public and private MAR laboratories, which contribute to the educational goals and host students for hands-on training activities.

Courses and Educational Activities
The program spans two years and is divided into semesters, comprising eleven simple or integrated courses. Upon passing the respective exams, students earn 90 university credits (CFU). Additional activities, including elective courses, cross-disciplinary skill development (soft skills), thesis preparation, and the final exam, provide the remaining 30 CFU required to achieve the total of 120 CFU necessary for graduation. Teaching methods include lectures, practical lessons, and laboratory internships.

Internships and International Opportunities
Students enrolled in the Master’s Degree in Biotechnologies of Human Reproduction have access to resources provided by the University of Siena, including opportunities to undertake pre- or post-graduation internships, also in international laboratories with which specific agreements are in place.

Per l'accesso al Corso di laurea magistrale in Biotechnologies of Human Reproduction LM-9 è necessario possedere una laurea o laurea magistrale, un diploma universitario di durata triennale, una laurea quadriennale vecchio ordinamento di tipo biologico, biotecnologico, medico-sanitario conseguito in qualsiasi sede universitaria nazionale o di altro titolo equipollente, giudicato idoneo, conseguito all'estero. E' necessario possedere un'adeguata preparazione di base in citologia, biochimica, biologia, biologia molecolare, genetica, microbiologia, fisiologia generale.

I requisiti curricolari sono soddisfatti possedendo una laurea o una laurea magistrale in una delle seguenti classi del D.M. 270/2004 (o corrispondenti nell'ex DM 509/99):
L-2 Biotecnologie
L-13 Scienze Biologiche
LM-6 Biologia
LM-9 Biotecnologie Mediche, Veterinarie e Farmaceutiche
LM-41 Medicina e Chirurgia
LM-13 Farmacia e farmacia industriale

Possono essere ammessi anche laureati provenienti da classi di laurea diverse, purché abbiano acquisito crediti formativi in specifici settori disciplinari sotto indicati in misura non inferiore a 75 CFU complessivi e abbiano conseguito il titolo di studio con una votazione minima, indicata nel Regolamento didattico del corso di studio:

Per gli studenti in possesso dei requisiti curricolari sarà verificata la personale preparazione, secondo le modalità indicate nel regolamento didattico del corso di studio.

Inoltre è richiesta la conoscenza della lingua inglese di livello B2 del quadro comune europeo di riferimento per le lingue del Consiglio d'Europa.

In order to be admitted to the Master's Degree in Biotechnologies of Human Reproduction LM-9, the students must already have a master's degree, or other qualifications obtained abroad in the field of biotechnologies, life sciences or medicine, which are recognized as an equivalent matter, in accordance with current legislation. The Master's Degree in Biotechnologies of Human Reproduction LM9 is a course to which candidates can access freely once their curriculum requirements and personal preparation have been examined. Graduate and undergraduate Italian students who have planned to graduate during the current academic year, are suitable to be registered in this Course, depending on whether the degree is officially accredited, in accordance with the educational requirements listed below: L-2 Biotechnologies L-13 Biological Sciences LM-6 Biology LM-9 Medical, Veterinary e Pharmaceutical Biotechnologies LM-41 Medicine and Surgery LM-13 Pharmacy and Industrial Pharmacy Graduates from different degree courses can also be admitted, if they have obtained a degree mark of at least 100/110 and have obtained educational credits in specific disciplinary sectors indicated below for not less than 75 CFU: - BIO/10; BIO/11, BIO/13; BIO/14 BIO/18; BIO/19; BIO/06; BIO/16; BIO/17, MED/03; MED/07, MED/46 These students will have to undergo a personal preparation check. The student qualification and the educational requirements necessary for the admission will be verified by multiple choice written test administered by the teachers of the course. The test will include questions of cytology, general biology, molecular biology, biochemistry, genetics, microbiology and general physiology. Students who have obtained a suitable Degree or Master Degree abroad are admitted to the Master's course in Biotechnologies of Human Reproduction LM9. For graduates in foreign universities, the adequacy of the curriculum requirements will be assessed on a case-by-case basis considering the consistency of the programs carried out in the various subject areas. Graduates in foreign universities will have to fill out a multiple-choice test in English to verify the personal preparation in the following disciplines: cytology, biochemistry, biology, molecular biology, medical and genetics. The detailed topics related to the required cognitive requisites and all the information concerning the assessment tests of the individual preparation for the admission to the Master's Degree Program will be available well in advance on the website of the Master's Degree program. In addition, a B2 level proficiency in English, as defined by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) of the Council of Europe, is required.
