Course contents

The Course, taught entirely in English, aims to train professionals in the field of cosmetics, bridging the gap between cutting-edge academic research and practical industry applications in cosmetology and dermatology, particularly in skin health and anti-aging strategies. The course aims to synergize the academic expertise of Università Politecnica delle Marche (UNIVPM) with the research and development experience of Beiersdorf AG to promote advanced research and education in skin biology and cosmetology.
The course promotes an integrated approach that combines rigorous academic training with tangible industrial exposure. It includes both a practical-theorical module at UNIVPM and an industrial practice internship at Beiersdorf AG's research and development laboratories in Hamburg (Germany), for which students will receive a financial contribution to cover their living expenses.

The course will cover the following subjects:
- Basic skin anatomy and physiology
- Cell biology of epidermis
- Cell biology of dermis and subcutis
- Physiological changes in skin over time (cutaneous aging)
- Oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction
- Targeted biochemical pathways to mitigate aging effects
- Skin antioxidant defence
- Biochemical markers of oxidatively damaged and senescent cells
- Advanced Microscopy for studying skin at the cellular and subcellular levels
- Advanced research in cellular senescence and inflammaging
- Alternative test models based on 3Rs principles, in cosmetology and skin aging research
- Emerging trends and innovations in anti-aging treatments
- Progress in transdermal delivery systems

The course is taught entirely in English and will last roughly 15 weeks.

The first module will last 118 hours, including 44 hours of theoretical-practical classes and 74 hours of individual study. It will be articulated in modules of variable duration over the course of 3 weeks. It will take place in the classrooms and laboratories of the Polo Montedago and the Polo Medicina buildings of the Università Politecnica delle Marche, presumably from June 8 to June 26, 2026. Lectures will be in-person and attendance is mandatory for at least 80% of the activities.

The second module will involve an industrial practice internship during which students will carry out project activities. It will take place in Hamburg in the laboratories of Beiersdorf AG, for a duration of 300 hours. This phase will require a commitment of 3 months and participants will be split in two groups, one carrying out the internship roughly from July 1st to September 18th of 2026 and one from October 1st to December 15th of 2026. Attendance is mandatory for at least 80% of the internship.

At the end of the industrial internship, students will undertake a final exam, consisting in the discussion and evaluation of the results obtained in the student’s capstone project (PowerPoint presentation of about 20 minutes). The final grade will take into account the final exam, the results of the intermediate test (or the replacement test during the final exam) and the internship evaluation provided by the Partner Company, on the students’ ability to work in a team and transfer scientific knowledge and learning in applicative projects
related to skin health. All these evaluations will contribute to the final grade, expressed on a scale of 30 with the acquisition of 16 CFU (ECTS).

The Commission has a maximum of 40 points available for qualifications, with the following criteria: - up to 10 points for the degree grade; - up to 10 points for a degree thesis relevant to the subject of the course or related subjects; - up to 10 points for scientific publications, with regard to those most relevant to the course; - up to 10 points for experience in activities related to the subject of the course; The Commission has a maximum of 10 points for the interview. The interview is aimed at assessing other qualifications, knowledge, or experience that the Commission considers relevant.
