Course contents

The PhD course in Cultural and Environmental Heritage is a programme that stems from the joint effort of the many research areas active at the Ravenna Campus of the Alma Mater Studiorum - University of Bologna. The programme aims to combine the many different forms of knowledge concerning the cultural and environmental heritage, the core identity of the initiative, in a coherent transdisciplinary perspective. The programme aims to foster a research mode focused on some shared aspects of research topics in the different disciplines, and not on individual disciplinary perspectives. The adopted approach fosters close cooperation between humanistic, scientific, legal and social disciplines, within disciplinary and interdisciplinary laboratories. PhD students will acquire a high level of specialisation on specific topics, but at the same time a broader general education that makes them particularly well prepared to collaborate in multidisciplinary research teams.
The PhD programme has strong elements of internationalisation through
- the promotion of cultural offerings at international sites to encourage the participation of foreign students;
- the teaching of international experts, also using the funding/co-financing opportunities offered by the University (e.g. already approved invitations to high-profile foreign lecturers by the Institute for Advanced Studies)
- exploiting the international network of the members of the College and/or their facilities, to offer internships and periods of residence in foreign research centres. The assistance of the Campus International Office staff to foreign students will be promoted through the PhD site, for their integration in the local reality (welcome week, buddy system, Italian language courses, etc.) and for the solution of problems concerning visas, residence permits and medical assistance.
- The presence within it of a specific curriculum in English ("Science and Technologies for Cultural Heritage"), aimed at the study of aspects more specifically related to technologies for the conservation and restoration of cultural heritage, which is expected to bring, also on the basis of previous experience, a very strong element of internationalisation.
- Conventions and multi-year co-tutoring framework agreements with prestigious international academic institutions (including UNA Her Doc).
- The doctorate is configured as a Campus doctorate, and therefore has a strong innovative value, and tends towards a high degree of internationalisation, both through the institution of co-tutela with foreign universities, and with the enrolment of doctoral students belonging to international networks (such as ERC, MSCA-ITN, etc.). it is strongly recommended to spend at least 1 month studying abroad.
It is envisaged that the training course will provide in-depth knowledge in the various fields but will also offer multidisciplinary contributions to the development of advanced theories and techniques for the conservation, protection and management of the commons in environmental, cultural and legal terms.

Employment opportunities

In addition to the training of new researchers to be included in national and international research - not only with reference to university recruitment or recruitment in public research organisations - the PhD graduates will gain high-level skills to develop new professional skills in the field of integrated management of cultural and environmental heritage. In particular, as far as heritage is concerned, the gradual transformation of public and private museums into organisations with research tasks will favour a gradual insertion of PhD graduates in these new realities. This is due in part to the numerous agreements already in place, and to a hopefully increasingly close relationship with the Ministry of Culture (MiC) and the Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security (MATTM).
In particular, the 'Science and Technologies for Cultural Heritage' (STECH) curriculum is qualified as a course specifically targeted to the qualification of 'conservation scientist', whose professional profile is among those recognised by the MiC.
The two curricula provide a training in the national and international business in the Heritage Science, which requires high multidisciplinary skills.
Moreover, PhD graduates acquire skills useful for the profiles of officials regulated by Ministerial Decree 244 of 20 May_2019

In particular, the doctorate in BCA contributes to the training of different specialists as Officers, as physical anthropologist, archaeologist, archivist, librarian, Officer in diagnostics and science and technology applied to cultural heritage, art historian, musicologist (DG-OR n. 1112, 2.7.2024); Officer in environmental management and land restoration (ISTAT code 2.2.1.2); Officer in technology transfer (ISTAT code 2.5.3.1.2).
The Advisory Committee discussed the figures identified and, given the now constantly changing landscape of professional figures, suggested stimulating creativity to identify new professional outlets, in addition to those already present in the public and private sectors related to cultural and environmental heritage.
