Course contents

The PhD Programme in Biomedical, Electrical and System Engineering is aimed at training students to different areas in the domain of information engineering, so that they can collaborate within national and international research centres. Therefore, the training programme allows and favours training activities of different types, to be tailored according the specific needs of each PhD student.
In order to increase international collaborations, the Programme includes a compulsory research period abroad, which is supported by specific grants provided by the University of Bologna (e.g., the Marco Polo programme) and by funds provided by supervisors. In addition, specific opportunities aimed at attracting students from outside Italy are implemented.
The PhD Programme is divided into 3 curricula: Bioenginering, Electrical Engineering and Automatics and Operations Research.
The first one promotes the acquisition of advanced skills of highly interdisciplinary character, ranging from engineering to medical and biological sciences, and from
mathematics and physics to computer science.
The second curriculum provides a wide scientific and technical-professional training in electrical engineering, with good base knowledge, capacity for technological and design innovation, and specific electrical knowledge.
Finally, the last curriculum studies subjects characterized by the System Approach, which provides a very powerful viewpoint to face most problems in modern
engineering as well as in many other applied sectors and includes topics such as system and control theory, robotics and optimization.

Employment opportunities

The aim of the PhD Programme is to train researchers able to develop both research and professional activities. This requires an advanced knowledge in topics that are specific for each curriculum, as well as in basic topics in the mathematics and engineering domain, which are common to all curricula.
The PhD course has therefore the following main goals for the students: - use of tools and general methods of scientific research - methods and technologies of each curriculum - international comparison - fit autonomously in research team with the ability to manage projects and working groups. The first two objectives are achieved mainly in the first year, while the third and fourth goal in the next two years. These objectives are achieved through the study, documentation, research as well as by means of dissemination of the obtained results. The curricula of the course, tailored to each student, require such activities to be organized in line with the development of an independent research project in agreement with a supervisor (and possibly with co-supervisors). The skills acquired during the PhD Programme will be spent from the professional point of view, both in Italy and abroad, within academic institutions, public and private research centres, and industries.
