Course contents

The PhD programme in Mathematics in Pisa is rooted in the longstanding tradition of excellence of the Pisan school of mathematics. Many members of the Department are internationally recognised for their research contributions and maintain an extensive network of scientific collaborations. Notably, there is a strong scientific connection with the Scuola Normale Superiore, one of the world’s leading institutions for mathematical research.
The Department hosts several high-level research groups, ranging from those active in the most theoretical fields—such as Logic, Algebra, Geometry, and Analysis—to those more open to applications and/or interactions with industry and society, including Probability, Mathematical Physics, Numerical Analysis, Mathematics Education, and the History of Mathematics.
Enhancing the PhD programme is a central goal of the Department of Excellence project, currently underway in the Department of Mathematics at the University of Pisa for the 2023–2027 period.
Given all these factors, the PhD programme offers students a broad and high-quality range of academic and research opportunities.

Employment opportunities

By its very nature, the main professional outcome of the PhD Program in Mathematics—also the predominant one in purely statistical terms—is academic research, carried out at universities or research centers in Italy and abroad. Typically, the academic career of our PhD graduates begins with postdoctoral positions (fixed-term, in most cases at institutions abroad) and subsequently leads to a faculty position at a university in Italy or abroad. As confirmation of the quality of the training provided by the PhD program, it is worth noting that the large majority of those who have pursued an academic career have developed it outside the University of Pisa.
For those who have chosen more applied research paths, a fairly common career option is employment in industries or companies characterized by high technological content (including some spin-offs of the University of Pisa).
Another rather frequent career choice is teaching at secondary schools, which in almost all cases begins immediately after completion of the PhD program.
