Course contents

The Doctoral Programme in Sociology aims at forming highly qualified researchers able to do both applied and fundamental research in Universities and scientific research centres or market research institutes.
In particular, the Programme aims to educate professionals that will be able to apply their knowledge in an interdisciplinary fashion, based on the education they acquire during this post-graduate Programme in the various areas covered by the Department of Sociology and Social Research.
To this aim, the training programme aims to enhance the study of the sociological theory.
Students are encouraged to confront themselves with theories, approaches and methodologies of all social sciences.
The main qualitative and quantitative research techniques as well as data analyses are explored.

Upon hearing the Doctoral Programme Committee, the Rector appoints the Admissions Committee. It consists of at least three members chosen among Italian and foreign professors and researchers, who are experts in the scientific areas of the Doctorate. The Committee may also include up to two experts, even foreign, of public and private national and international research organizations. There is a pre-selection phase that does not contribute to the formation of the final grade: Qualifications assessment and evaluation of the research project according to Art. 4 of the call; on the results of this evaluation depends access to the second pre-selection part. Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed in English in order to assess their theoretical and methodological competences, research skills and their motivation. The interview also aims at evaluating the coherence of candidate’s research interests as presented in the submitted research proposal with their curriculum vitae et studiorum, as well as to assess their active and passive proficiency in English. Candidates who intend to compete also for potential topic-specific grants, made available after this call's publication, must express their intention to the Admissions Committee before the qualifications are assessed. Those candidates will be evaluated on their knowledge of the specific subject matter(s) of that grant. A candidate’s request to allocate an eventual topic-specific grant implies that candidate’s preference for the specific scholarship above all other grants. The assessment criteria and methods for the competitive selection process are as follows: For the evaluation of the Academic Record (CV) and the Research Project, the Selection Committee has a maximum of 100 points available, distributed as follows: a) From 0 to 50 points for the Curriculum Vitae (academic background, qualifications, certifications, etc.). b) From 0 to 50 points for the Research Project. Note: To be admitted to the oral examination, candidates must achieve a minimum score of 70/100 in the evaluation of their CV and research project. For the oral examination, the Selection Committee has a maximum of 100 points available, distributed as follows: - From 0 to 30 points: Disciplinary expertise in the field of Sociology and Social Research; - From 0 to 25 points: Individual aptitude and motivation for research; - From 0 to 35 points: Discussion of the research project (clarity of presentation, logical reasoning, synthesis skills, ability to defend the project’s content and methodology, and knowledge of the relevant literature); - From 0 to 10 points: Level of proficiency in the English language. The list of the candidates admitted to the interview and the final ranking will be published at the selection’s webpage. The oral examination may take place in one of two modalities (at the candidate's choice) : a) at the University of Trento b) by videoconference Further technical information will be provided in due time by the doctoral secretariat. Information regarding the date, time (and room at the premises of the University of Trento, if in presence) at which the oral examination will be held will be provided at least 20 days prior to the date of the interview on the selection’s webpage. Any changes to the date of the exams will be published on the same website.
