Course contents

The PhD Course has two curriculum:

Modern Languages, Cultures and Societies Curriculum:
They include the areas listed below, encompassing stylistic, rhetorical, philological, historical, and epistemological aspects, considered from a culture-specific and/or a cross-cultural perspective:
• Anglo-American cultures and literatures; English language, culture and literature; English-speaking postcolonial cultures and literatures; French and Francophone cultures and literatures; Hispanic American cultures and literatures; Iberian languages, cultures and literatures (Spanish, Catalan, Portuguese); Lusophone cultures and literatures of Latin America and Africa; German and Austrian languages, cultures and literatures; Slavic and Balkan area languages, cultures and literatures: Albanian, Bulgarian, Czech, Croatian, Greek, Polish, Russian, Serbian, Slovenian, and historical Slavic-ecclesiastical language areas; Scandinavian languages, cultures and literatures; Comparative literature.
Within the academic disciplines in the sectors mentioned above, there will be disciplinary approaches and contributions based on the study of languages (Language and translation) applied to foreign literatures and cultures (e.g., stylistic, rhetorical, computational, philological, translation, etc.); as well as comparative and interdisciplinary approaches and contributions, always having as their aim the study of literary texts and cultural phenomena. In comparative and interdisciplinary studies, the principle of the centrality of culture and literature of reference will be crucial, in which language students will deepen their research and write the related doctoral thesis.
Linguistics Curriculum:
• Didactics of foreign languages and Italian to foreigners; Linguistics applied to deafness and language disorders and typical and atypical language acquisition; Computational linguistics; Historical linguistics; Theoretical linguistics (generative grammar); Variational linguistics and sociolinguistics; Grammar theory, in synchronic and diachronic perspective; Philological sciences

Candidates are required to have certified English proficiency at least B2 level - under the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) - at the time of enrolment, except for the possibility of acquiring it subsequently, but no later than 31st December 2026, otherwise they will be excluded from the PhD programme. Only for candidates in Modern Languages, Cultures and Societies Curriculum: Candidates are required to specify in their CV the knowledge of two languages chosen from: Albanian; Bulgarian; Catalan; Czech; English; French; German; Modern Greek; Polish; Portuguese; Russian; Serbo-Croatian; Slovenian; Spanish; Swedish, German.
