Course contents

PhD research proposals are related to: Languages, cultures, history, thought, art and economic-legal institutions of Asia and North Africa.
As regards the PhD in partnership with Universität Heidelberg, Germany, the topics focus on "Transcultural studies", in particular: human and social sciences that deal with the connections in the North African and Eurasian area with a transcultural approach (diachrony or synchrony) transcending the limits imposed by national borders and by the institutions that reproduce them. Research objectives may concern topics such as: alternative visions of cohesion and transnational governance; multinational cooperations and their impact on collective identities; communication and cross-cultural contacts; social engagement, narratives and representations; the changing senses of aesthetics; and, in general, how these activities and attitudes challenge, disrupt or alter existing institutions, attitudes and practices.

Candidates are required to have certified English proficiency at least B2 level - under the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) - at the time of enrolment, except for the possibility of acquiring it subsequently, but no later than 31st December 2026, otherwise they will be excluded from the PhD programme. Candidates are required to specify in their CV the knowledge of one of the following languages (ancient or modern): Ainu, Arabic, Aramaic, Armenian, Azerbaijani, Chinese, Coptic, Georgian, Syriac, Hebrew, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, Marathi, Mongolian, Modern Greek, Pali, Persian, Russian, Sanskrit, Thai, Tibetan, Turkish, Urdu, Vietnamese.

Rights of data subjects:

  • You can exercise the rights granted to you by current legislation on the protection of personal data, including the right to ask the data controller to access your personal data and to correct or erase them, restrict or object to processing of your data, in addition to the right of data portability within the limits of the provisions of art. 15-21 of Regulation the 2016/679;
  • Pursuant to art. 77 of the Regulation, if you believe that the processing of your data violates the legislation on the protection of personal data, you have the right to lodge a complaint with the Italian Data Protection Authority or the control authority of the EU Member State in which you usually reside, work or the place where the alleged violation occurred;
