Course contents

Cultural anthropology is traditionally conceived of as the study of human beings in relation to their historical and cultural differences, and Ethnology as the study of the cultural and geographic domains where those differences unfold.
The Master Course in Cultural Anthropology and Ethnology at the University of Turin particularly acknowledges the relevance of both practices of theoretical elaboration and discussion, and a thorough ethnographic knowledge, specifically focusing on various fields such as, among others, medical, political, and visual anthropology, an anthropology of violence, of family and childhood, of religions. The Course also addresses main contemporary issues in anthropology such as forms of racism; the relation between family, parenthood, childhood and the State; politics of memory and the body; ambiguities of the colonial legacy; and current cultural, religious and political conflicts in various societies. It offers a specific focus on the analysis of migratory processes, practices of belonging, and controversial issues related to political asylum and citizenship unfolding in a global context of growing inequalities, violence and human rights’ violations, and of ecologic crises (such as global warming, resource exploitation projects, and their effects on local communities and their environment), that anthropology is able to address.
The Master Course in Cultural Anthropology and Ethnology aims at both questioning categories, institutions and cultural practices and their historical genealogy, and include within its theoretical realm new issues related to environmental anthropology and the study of “non-humans”, following contemporary debates on dialectical oppositions such as nature/culture, or subject/object, in line with the so-called “ontological turn”.
Furthermore, the Master Course follows an interdisciplinary model conceived of as a critical project able to question the different forms of knowledge involved, and to propose new research objects and fields. Such an interdisciplinary model places anthropology in a structural connection to humanities and other social sciences such as sociology, history, oriental studies, geography, political sciences and language studies; it also establishes a connection with other traditions as the Subaltern Studies, Cultural Studies, Gender Studies, and Postcolonial Studies. Along with those disciplines, also anthropology contributes to think through and re-configure contemporary issues.
An integral part of the Course is the possibility it offers to young anthropologists to both attend laboratories and stages within a wide variety of institutions and associations, and to carry on fieldwork in different cultural areas, within and outside Europe.

In sum, the Master Course in Cultural Anthropology and Ethnology intends to forge a discipline which is sensitive to contemporary concerns, able to train students through an innovative model to produce knowledge: one which applies to a wide range of issues, which is epistemologically sound and able to listen to, question and dialog with different “voices” and forms of knowledge
