Course contents

The PhD programme in Ethnology and Ethnoanthropology aims at training young graduates in the theory and practice of scientific research in Anthropology with particular reference to fieldwork, offering them theoretical and methodological grounds both through a teaching programme and a tutorial assistance in fieldwork in the framework of an international network of scientific excellence. The PhD programme is articulated in three curricula:
1. Cultural Heritage
2. Medical Anthropology
3. Anthropology of the Institutions and Development
The three curricula have an international dimension and are characterized by a strong specialization. The training objectives of the PhD programme, according to the different fields of interest, pursue the formation of researchers in the ethno-anthropological sector according to the main theoretical achievements at international level. Particular attention is also devoted to theoretical and problematic issues concerning the relations between Anthropology and bordering disciplines (Economics, Geography, Psychology, Historical and Social Sciences). The specific objectives of the PhD programme refer to the scientific sectors of Cultural and Social Anthropology, Ethnology, Geography, widely represented within the board of teachers. In particular, these objectives refer to anthropological, historical and territorial issues concerning: (a) the policies and practices of the institutions, public administrations and the state; (b) the dynamic of health and sickness, the policies and practices of the health institutions, and the traditional medicine; (c) the practices and symbolic rhetoric of cultural formations; (d) history, cultural memory, orality and writings and their public use; (e) material and immaterial cultural heritage, and the policies, practices and rhetoric of the patrimonialization processes; (f) development and globalization processes, as well as policies, practices and rhetoric of institutions working within the International Cooperation to Development. All these fields must not be thought of as mere topics of the training objectives of the PhD programme, but rather they must be conceived as areas that characterize particularly the scientific competences of the members of the board of teachers, and therefore as fields in which may be structured the itineraries of scientific training in a cross-curricular perspective.
The first year of the three year PhD course is devoted to a preparatory didactics, and the PhD students follow a unitary teaching itinerary organized by the board of teachers in collaboration with Italian and International scholars. The topics of the teaching activity are selected year by year according to the scientific programmes of the board of teachers as well as to the specific needs of the students. At the end of the first year, each PhD student is assigned to a panel of two tutors (members of the board of teachers, or belonging to different PhD programmes or to national or International partner Institutions), that will guide the student in the planning of his/her research programme according to the four curriculums of the PhD programme (1. Institutions, state, governance, international cooperation, development and globalization processes; 2. Medical Anthropology, anthropology of the health institutions; 3. Material and immaterial cultural heritage). The second year is entirely devoted to fieldwork under the tutorship of the panel. The third year is devoted to the elaboration of the PhD thesis, and to the participation to periodical workshops for the evaluation of the work done
