Course contents

This Master programme educates the next generation of agroecologists with necessary competences (knowledge and skills), needed to become active facilitators of change in agrifood systems and to support food sovereignty.

With a systemic case- and action-based approach and classes integrating natural and social sciences, our students will develop:

An understanding of the ecological, technical, social, economic, cultural and policy dimensions of agricultural and food systems;
A trans-disciplinary profile and competences based on holistic knowledge and necessary skills to cross the gap between knowing and doing and to become a facilitator of change.
The programme is based on an experiential learning approach and supervised action-research in agroecological communities, combined with farm visits, garden activities, lectures and seminars on campus.
This programme links theory with action and focuses on the self development of students’ competences. As part of the learning experience, students explore and contribute to the development of a community for three months, connecting theoretical knowledge with the practical and different stakeholders.

The programme includes farm visits in Piedmont, garden activities at the university garden and one study trip, which are dynamic learning tools that gives students unique access to farming experiences.

Agroecology is considered jointly as a science, a practice and a social movement. It encompasses the whole food system from the soil to the organisation of human societies. It is value-laden and based on core principles.

Therefore, the following 4 modules are developed:

Action Learning & Action Research: This module focuses on an experiential learning approach, that enables students to acquire the competencies (observation, participation, dialogue, visioning and reflection, as well as their interactions) to understand complex situations, and to support a sustainable development of farming and food systems.
Food Sovereignty: This module focuses on political and social dimensions, referring to the institutional measures determining people’s right to define their agri-food systems, as well as on anthropological and social aspects, and gender issues.
Sustainable Agroecosystems: This module focuses on the ecological dimension of agroecosystems. It introduces the principle of agroecology and the agroecological practises, including agroecological methods for cropping and animal breeding in different contexts.
Food Systems and Economy: This module focuses on economic issues of the “Farm-to-Fork” system, including food policy, food supply chains, food marketing & consumer studies, and sustainable diets.

All the aforementioned application steps are free and non-binding. The University of Gastronomic Sciences does not have an early admissions process.
