Course contents

The present PhD programme aims at promoting the study of the cultural heritage of the Ancient world and, in particular, of the transmission of classical culture in its manifold themes and forms: the tradition of texts, documents and historical sources; the survival and recurrences of ancient art and literature; the evolution of writings and book forms.
Classical civilization has deeply influenced the development of the European cultural heritage by engaging a productive dialectic between continuity and innovation in different periods and contexts.
The PhD programme provides future scholars with highly specialized and up to date research tools and methods, in order to allow students to: 1) gain a thorough knowledge of both the material and conceptual dimensions of the transmission of the Classics; 2) understand and enhance the fundamental contribution of the Middle and Modern Ages in the process of acquisition and transmission of the Ancient culture. Although interdisciplinary, the programme is focused on a well-defined issue; it seeks to give specific methodological competences in the fields of palaeography and diplomatics, philology, critical analysis of literary texts and art works, historical, digital humanities, archeology and art historical sources. All such skills are necessary to a proper and solid research in the tradition, reception and interpretation of the ancients from the origins to our contemporary age.

Selection procedures and criteria for applicants to the 4 grants funded by the University and 1 grant funded by the DM 351 on the topic “Pittura funeraria a rischio: dalla ricerca interdisciplinare (analisi archeometriche, diagnostiche ed iconografiche) a valorizzazione integrata per una fruizione inclusiva e sostenibile’’ are as follows: - written exam (max score 40 out of 100); - qualifications (max score 20 out of 100); - oral interview (max score 40 out of 100). For the written exam, candidates can choose one of the following options: - translation of a piece of a poem or a prose text from Greek or Latin with comment; - transcription of one or more facsimiles from manuscripts or documents with historical, palaeographic and diplomatic comment; - composition on a philological topic: methods, issues, techniques, applications and critical history of texts; - composition on an art historical topic: methods, issues, history and critical analysis of works and artistic phenomena - composition on an archeological topic: methodological, chronological, iconographic, documentation and enhancement issues. Each of the above-mentioned options will be chosen among 3 possible topics prepared by the Admission Board in advance. Candidates will have 4 hours for their written exam. Candidates must achieve the minimum score of 24 out of 100 in the written exam in order to be admitted to the oral interview. The oral interview will consist in: (a) discussion about the written exam; (b) discussion on the research proposal; (c) test of the methodological and disciplinary skills necessary for the realization of the project; (d) foreign language test: the candidate will be asked to read and translate a text in English, French or German. The list of the admitted candidates will be published on the Scuola Superiore website: https://www.scuolasuperiore.unich.it Foreign candidates can choose to be examined in one of the following languages: Italian, English, French, German. Candidates who choose to take their exam in English, French or German will have a supplementary Italian language test. For candidates who compete for the grant funded by the DM 351 on the topic “Pittura funeraria a rischio: dalla ricerca interdisciplinare (analisi archeometriche, diagnostiche ed iconografiche) a valorizzazione integrata per una fruizione inclusiva e sostenibile’’ a supplementary oral interview is foreseen, which leads to a specific judgment of suitability. Selection procedures and criteria for applicants to the 4 grants funded by foreign countries are as follows: - qualifications (max score 40 out of 100); - the research proposal (max score 60 out of 100). Selection procedures and criteria for applicants to the 2 grants, 1 position reserved to employees of the Centro per il libro e la lettura on the topic “Il libro come bene culturale e la lettura come esperienza attiva, cognitiva e inclusiva, anche con riferimento a metodologie innovative e alla valorizzazione del libro come prodotto storico e artistico” and 1 scholarship funded by ERC-2017-ADG "Graff-IT. Writing on the Margins. Graffiti in Italy, 7th to 16th century" on the topic “Studio dei graffiti in ambienti ipogei di origine naturale dell'Italia meridionale”, are as follows: - qualifications (max score 40 out of 100); - interview (max score 60 out of 100). Candidates must achieve the minimum score of 24 out of 100 in the qualifications, in order to be admitted to the interview. The interview will consist in: (a) discussion on the research proposal on the specific topic; (b) test of the methodological and disciplinary skills necessary for the realization of the project; (c) foreign language test: the candidate will be asked to read and translate a text in English, French or German. The list of the admitted candidates will be published on the Scuola Superiore website: https://www.scuolasuperiore.unich.it Candidates can choose to take their exams in Italian/English/French/German. Minimum score required: 60 out of 100.
