Course contents

The Master's Degree Course (MDC) in Biotechnology for Neuroscience
aims to train professionals with a high level of knowledge of the most advanced biotechnological applications in the field of basic and applied biomedical research, with particular attention to those concerning the Neuroscience sector.
To this end, the MDC intends to provide first of all the interdisciplinary knowledge necessary to operate with high levels of competence in the field of scientific and technical-productive development that characterizes biotechnologies applied to medicine. At the same time, the MDC aims to train a specialist with multidisciplinary skills for the exercise of qualified activities in the field of Neuroscience.
Graduates will apply biological knowledge and quantitative study methodologies of the functioning of the nervous system at the molecular, cellular, integrative and behavioral level, in physiological conditions or in genetic or pathological conditions. The skills acquired will allow them to enter academic, public or private research contexts and in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry, especially but not exclusively in those relating to Neuroscience.
The training course includes activities aimed at acquiring advanced knowledge and skills regarding: statistical and computer analysis of large amounts of data, machine learning, bioinformatics and computational biology; the molecular, cellular, biochemical, genetic and physiological basis of the normal and pathological functioning of the nervous system; the morphology of the nervous system and its modalities of development and connection; the methods and techniques for studying the nervous system and its functioning in normal conditions and in the main neurological and psychiatric diseases; the development and use of biotechnological therapeutic approaches; man-machine interfaces; health legislation; the functioning of biotech companies, neuro-economics and neuro-marketing.
To obtain the final academic qualification, it is necessary to acquire at least 120 ECTS. The MDG se is not divided into curricula, but 12 ECTS of optional activities are foreseen that will allow undergraduates to flexibly direct their preparation towards specialized areas of Neuroscience. The choice of these activities by the students must be made when enrolling in the second year of the course.
To favor the internationalization of the course and for a more effective integration of graduates in an international working context, all courses will be delivered in English.
The reference structure of the MDC is the Department of Neuroscience 'Rita Levi Montalcini' (DNS), founded in 2012 to bring together different academic, clinical and biomedical traditions, in a coherent scientific whole to provide added value to research groups and individual researchers, to develop interactions between clinical and basic sciences.

Notes
Candidates holding an Italian Bachelor Degree in either Biotechnology (class L2) or Biological Sciences (class L13) obtained with a final score above or equal to 99/110 will be admitted without a verification test. All the other students will be evaluated through an online test on the topics listed in the previous section.
