Course contents

The Master Degree Course in Languages and Civilization of Asia and Africa stems from the legacy of the nearly two hundred-year-old research and teaching experience of the Subalpine Oriental School. The tradition of classical studies, especially for the South Asian and Near East areas, has widened its horizons to other areas of Asia and Africa for decades, including also sound competences on the modern and contemporary world.
The course allows students to choose a macroarea of Asia or Africa to study its languages and cultures. During the two-year period students have the opportunity to take internships and internships at local companies and institutions. Study abroad is strongly encouraged. In addition to studying at European universities through the Erasmus project, there are bilateral agreements with non-EU institutions where students can continue the study of their chose languages. More agreements are being finalized. Graduates will have an in-depth knowledge of the culture of the African countries on which their curriculum is focused, with particular reference to the historical development of civilization and culture in the field of literature, history, philosophy, art history, etc., and also in relation to analogous and/or synchronous phenomena of the so-called "Western" cultures.
Graduates will have in-depth knowledge of at least one of the languages of Asia and Africa, supported by appropriate philosophical bases and enriched by the mastery of a lexicon acquired through a sound literary education as well as technical language skills, with particular reference to commercial lexicon.
Graduates will also be able to express autonomous judgment about the historical-social phenomena of the countries studied, with particular reference to contemporary societies.
They will be able to use one of the languages of the European Union, in addition to Italian - both written and oral – in order to access to literature not available in Italian. They will be able to use the basic IT tools in the specific areas of expertise, to know the main word processing systems in their language of specialization, to access the Internet information in their field of study.
In addition to two foreign languages the course offers more specific cultural lessons, such as linguistics, literature, history, religions and philosophies of different countries, as well as economic, legal, social, political and communication disciplines.

in order to be admitted students must:
• have a BA (or equivalent) diploma from an internationally legally recognized university
• have a sufficient knowledge of the English language (written and spoken).
• have the specific knowledge required by their linguistic-cultural curriculum.
• have the academic knowledge and abilities that allow them to pursue a research project.
Students are selected through a comprehensive evaluation of the quality and quantity of their previous university studies by a Commission whose decision is final.
