Course contents

The Master's Degree Course in Archaeology and Ancient History aims to train high-skilled professionals in archaeological and historical fields. The Course has a strong cultural connotation based on the cross examination of sources and materiality.
In this view archaeologists should be able to read and interpret material contexts (monuments, things, artifacts, funerary objects) as evidence of human entanglements and as reflexes of complex historical phenomena. This is the reason why students in Archaeology are faced with the knowledge of different types of documentation to enhance their background, namely literary and epigraphic sources (in particular).
Similarly, historians of the ancient world are not able to grasp the complexity of the phenomena they observe if a serious and comprehensive approach to epigraphy and materiality is not followed along with the traditional approach to sources.
The complementarity of different, though similar, disciplines is the key leading to strong background and expertise of professionals that are asked to understand and communicate the ancient world comprehensively and completely, with a 360-degree view.
Theoretical bodies and practical training are both foreseen as essential experiences to form a master’s graduate in Archaeology and Ancient History.
Along with classroom lessons, laboratory and filed experiences (excavations and surveys) are envisioned to allow students to familiarize with archaeological and epigraphic records. Practice is likewise foreseen on Museums Collections. The wealthy of Heritage kept in Museums of Piedmont, and the deep historical and cultural stratification of our territory will allow immersive experiences in a regional context: several disciplines ranging from Protohistory to the Middle Ages are here involved.
Students will likewise acquire knowledge on different historical periods, areas, and contexts of culture, from East to West, thanks to the many educational activities scheduled in our programs.
Our Master's course also aims to ensure the continuity of long scientific tradition, which has seen professors from the University of Turin engaged in scientific enterprises and excavation activities both in Italy (Magna Grecia, Sicily, Valle d'Aosta, Piedmont, Liguria and Tuscany) and abroad (with the support of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs: Egypt, Cyprus, Iraq, Iran and Turkmenistan). Respectful of this tradition, highly esteemed in the field of historical and archaeological sciences, our Academic staff conduct yearly excavation campaigns in Italy and in Countries of the MENA, allowing students to advance learning thanks to field practice. Training and educational trips are as well foreseen for students of epigraphy in Greece and Italy to provide specialized historical knowledge and to enhance academic tenure with direct experience on epigraphic material.
In summary, our Master’s Degree Course will:
– offer an advanced and interdisciplinary training with a strong background in Humanities;
– acquire advanced knowledge in research, protection and management of archaeological and historical heritage;
– provide skills required by employment opportunities in Institutions engaged in research and protection, Museums, Superintendencies, Foundations, Archaeological Cooperatives, Organization involved in cultural tourism, Media;
– ensure full eligibility to be enrolled in school education;
– provide the qualification required to access third level education courses, like Schools of Specialization in Archaeology, and research, like PhDs in Ancient History and Archaeology, as well as other second level Masters.
