Course contents

The objective of the postgraduate degree Course in Art History is to train specialists with advanced scientific and professional skills necessary to face functional and operational tasks in the cultural field and specifically in the field of Art History, from the Middle Ages to the Contemporary, from a territorial, national and international perspective.
The course is aimed at providing graduates with historical, philological, theoretical and methodological tools suited to the study and knowledge, as well as to the organization and enhancement of cultural heritage. The acquisition of specialized skills will enable them to face and lead:
- the recognition, attribution and critical interpretation of works of art in their historical and environmental contexts;
- scientific research and management activities in museum institutions, libraries and archives;
- planning, coordination and management activities in the field of conservation and restoration of cultural heritage;
- cognitive investigations and territorial cataloging campaigns and for the networking of the artistic heritage;
- the elaboration of communication projects aimed at the knowledge and enhancement of artistic and cultural property both in the fields of scientific research and through the tools of dissemination, media and cultural tourism;
- educational training and teaching of history and art criticism, museology, theory and criticism of restoration. The study of the characters and the historical-artistic development is supported by the knowledge of the problems of the management, conservation and restoration of the historical-artistic heritage. The historical, theoretical and methodological preparation is further enriched by concrete experiences in the field, through an internship to be held at museum institutions, foundations, libraries, archives, protection offices; stages, workshops, seminars, experiences and practical exercises in contact with the artworks; meetings with professional representatives of museums, soprintendenze, public bodies, restoration. The training profile is completed by the acquisition of at least one European Union language, in addition to Italian, and the main tools in the specific areas of competence.
The specialized professional skills acquired will enable graduates in the History of Art, subject to any necessary educational supplements, to enter competitions in public institutions (Museums, Soprintendenze, Archives and Libraries); to operate in private institutions (foundations, museums, collections, art galleries, documentation centers, companies and specialized cooperatives) and in the sectors of conservation and restoration, publishing, media, tourism and cultural enhancement. The postgraduate degree will also be a useful title for accessing the Specialization Schools in the History of Art and the Research Doctorates.
The methods for achieving the educational objectives include:
a) lessons, lectures, study groups, meetings and laboratories with experts and representatives of the specific institutions of the world of work and art, in particular Universities, Museums, Libraries, national and international Centers for the Study of Art.
b) experiences and practical exercises in museums and temporary exhibition venues, in libraries, in graphic design and art collections; contact with artworks and monuments, in order to ascertain the objectives achieved, the technical and critical skills achieved. The verification will take place through oral examination and written reports, which will ensure the acquisition of stylistic-formal, historical and critical knowledge, of the sources, of the artistic literature and of the history of conservation, as well as of the necessary abilities of comparison and reasoning.

The admission to the postgraduate degree Course in Art History depends on verifying the knowledge of each applicant and how s/he meets specific curriculum requirements. In order to access the postgraduate degree Course in Art History (LM-89), students must have completed a first level degree and earned at least 54 ECTs in the following Academic Fields and Disciplines (SSD):
- 36 ECTs, of which at least 6 for each SSD, in the following SSD: L-ART/01 History of Medieval Art, L-ART/02 History of Modern Art, L-ART/03 History of Contemporary Art, L-ART/04 Museology, Art, and Restoration Criticism. In order to complete these 36 ECTs, no more than 12 ECTs in the following SSD may concur: ICAR/18 History of Architecture, L-ANT/07 Classical Archaeology, L-ANT/08 Christian and Medieval Archaeology.

Part of the afore-mentioned credits may be earned also after the first level or four-year degree, in the form of single university courses.
Credits earned within first or second level masters will not however be taken into consideration for the purposes of admission.
Any curriculum inconsistency will be assessed by the Postgraduate Course Council.
If the applicant meets the specific curriculum requirements, s/he may enrol in the individual courses offered by the University and will have to pass the relative assessment before enrolling. Credits earned within first or second level masters will not however be taken into consideration for the purposes of admission.
The student’s own knowledge will however be assessed in the way described in detail in the teaching bylaws of the postgraduate course.

Admission tests: Students who meet the curriculum requirements will be assessed through an interview, which will be notified on the postgraduate course website in the Admission Requirements section.
During the interview, the board will appraise the applicant’s knowledge and his/her motivation, take into consideration his/her career and suggest possible ways to improve his/her knowledge.
