Course contents

The Master's Degree in Area and Global Studies for International Cooperation (AGIC) aims to provide the skills required to operate in the context of international cooperation, with a solid background in the interdisciplinary field of area studies and special competencies concerning a specific geographic/cultural area (Africa, Asia, and the Americas)
1. To this end, the curriculum of the Master’s Degree Program includes activities aimed at:
a) the acquisition of advanced knowledge in the fields of international cooperation and politics, the political, economic and social organization of specific geographic areas as well as their juridical, historical and anthropological dimension, in addition to global processes and phenomena;
b) the interpretation of social, economic, territorial, environmental and cultural transformations, also seen in their gender dimension;
c) the setting up of international cooperation projects and the evaluation of results.
The course is based on a general profile and three areas of specialization (Africa, the Americas and Asia). While the general profile offers the methodological tools and the skills needed to understand global phenomena and international cooperation, the specialization profiles aim to provide students with the skills necessary for the in-depth knowledge of the areas from an historical, anthropological, economic, socio-political, juridical, cultural, and linguistic point of view.
The training course is structured around a first year with the highest number of teaching and exam credits (6 compulsory courses for all students). Therefore, the students enter the second year with a wealth of knowledge suitable to make more conscious choices of specialization among the three profiles (Africa, the Americas and Asia). The structuring of the training path also allows the students to devote the necessary time to the internship activities and the writing of the degree thesis during the second year. The laboratory activities are distributed over both years in order to strengthen as much as possible the integration between the theoretical dimension and the practices of cooperation.
The course includes external activities, such as internships and work placements, at universities and research centers, central and local administrations, international organizations and non-governmental organizations working in the field of cooperation, territorial policies, immigration policies, and cultural integration.
The course, which takes up and develops the experiences gained in the best universities in the world, is aimed at creating specialists in:
a) international cooperation activities. Students, in addition to gaining basic economic, legal and socio-political knowledge to operate in the countries in which the cooperation is implemented, will be able to specialize in specific issues and countries;
b) analysis of local/global political and cultural processes. Students at the end of the Master's Degree will have acquired a series of skills that will allow them to identify the political, cultural and institutional actors of other countries and to understand the trends of the social, political and economic transformations taking place;
c) analysis of the institutional and socio-economic conditions of the areas in which cooperation activities are carried out. The acquired competences include the knowledge of economic and legal problems related to the operation of companies on the transnational markets.

Dissertation, which should have a certain original character and constitute a first approach to scientific work, can consist of: a) the framing of the state of a question and the critical review of scientific literature concerning a well-defined topic; b) an original research essay; c) a preliminary project concerning the setting up of an investigation, be it sociological, economic, etc., or to develop an international cooperation project

Other educational requirements
Students wishing to enroll for the Master's Degree Program in Area and Global Studies for International Cooperation must have a Bachelor's Degree or a three-year university degree or another qualification obtained abroad, recognized as appropriate according to current legislation. Students must also fulfill the curricular requirements and possess an adequate personal preparation, since enrolment is not foreseen with training shortages.
Adequate ability to use the main IT tools (word processing, use of spreadsheets, design and management of databases, use of presentation tools) is taken for granted.
The Master's Degree in Area and Global Studies for International Cooperation is not limited by number but access is determined by the Course.
To register for the Master's Program in Area and Global Studies for International Cooperation, candidates must have:
- adequate knowledge of English (CEFR B2 level or higher; during the COVID-19 situation, students are allowed to use IELTS Indicatoropen_in_new for application purposes);
- basic knowledge (CEFR B1 level or higher) of one of the other languages taught in the Master’s degree (French, Portuguese, Spanish, Swahili, Arabic, Hindi, Chinese, Russian);
- one of the following curricular requirements:
- Italian Degree in Political Science and International Relations (L-36 Class)
- Italian Degree in Peace Studies (L-37 Class).
