Course contents

The Faculty of Philosophy of the University Vita-Salute San Raffaele is traditionally committed to the development of original and ground-breaking philosophical investigation through lines of research that are constantly and fruitfully intertwined, though following different philosophical traditions and methodologies. Its philosophical research stems from the research centers, which support and promote several activities in the areas of ethics and political philosophy, phenomenology, philosophy of mind and language, gender studies, metaphysics and aesthetics, history of ideas. Some of these research lines, in particular philosophy of mind and language, decision theory and rationality theory, gender studies, phenomenology and ethics, are characterized by significant interdisciplinary interactions with scientific studies.

Research methodologies include historical-philosophical investigation, conceptual analysis, experimental methods, and the most advanced investigation techniques in neuroscience. Each research center carries out its own research in compliance with its own aims and methodologies, but fosters the equal availability of methods of inquiry and conceptual tools to graduate students, so as to encourage young scholars to hold an interdisciplinary approach, aimed at developing original and well-argued syntheses concerning various dimensions of human life and experience.
The PhD Course in Philosophy is divided into 4 different research areas:
- Ethics and politics
- History of ideas, history of philosophy, cultural history
- Philosophy of language, logic and epistemology
- Metaphysics and aesthetics

The University has already established stable relationships of cooperation with University of Köln (Germany), the University of Tours (France) and the University of Tolosa (France)

Admission to one of the Curricula of the PhD Course follows a two-stage comparative evaluation procedure: -Evaluation of candidates’ qualification -Interview For the purposes of the final ranking up to 60 points can be given in the first assessment phase to the candidates’ qualifications and up to 40 points can be given instead during the second assessment phase. Candidates with a final score lower than 60% of the total score (100 points) will be considered non-eligible.

8 fellowships assigned as follows:
- 4 free fellowships, one for each research area
- 4 project-based fellowships

The yearly amount of the fellowship is €16,243.00, subject to the INPS [Italian Social Security] separate management contribution, according to the regulations in force.
The total fellowship duration is three years. However, it is renewed yearly upon successful completion of the annual examination.
All the PhD students (including those without a fellowship) may apply for a budget for periods of research to be carried out abroad.
Each year, all PhD students are granted a budget amount to at least 10% of the fellowship.

I Dottori di ricerca in Filosofia hanno come naturale percorso professionale la carriera accademica nei rispettivi ambiti dell'indagine filosofica e l'acquisizione di una pluralità di metodi di studio li rende particolarmente adatti alla ricerca sui temi di punta della discussione filosofica contemporanea, come l'indagine sull'etica e le questioni politiche, sulla storia delle idee, sui processi cognitivi, linguistici e della comunicazione, e sui concetti fondamentali dell'estetica e della metafisica. Il carattere internazionale della didattica e l’attenzione ai contesti interdisciplinari della ricerca predispongono gli studenti all’acquisizione delle competenze necessarie per l’inserimento in istituzioni di ricerca accademiche e non accademiche, a livello nazionale e internazionale. Questa formazione rende altresì possibile il loro impiego in ambiti culturali e produttivi nei quali la conoscenza delle dinamiche delle facoltà umane e dei criteri di valutazione e giudizio che presiedono all'agire sia rilevante. In tal senso, possono essere interessati anche i contesti aziendali e quelli della produzione culturale, anche rivolta al grande pubblico attraverso diversi tipi di media, in cui la sintesi dei contenuti è funzionale all'efficacia del prodotto.
