Course contents

PhD Course in Cognitive and Behavioral Sciences is directed at national and international graduates. During their studies the PhD students will acquire knowledge and technical skills at public and private universities and research institutions. Graduates interested in deepening research areas aimed at understanding cognitive and behavioral processes both in normal and pathological contexts, and their neural bases, will have access to laboratories equipped with the most modern neurophysiological methods, of neurostimulation and neuroimaging enable advanced studies in the thematic fields proposed by the PhD. The PhD is oriented to the recruitment and training of PhD students with a background in the psychological sciences, but it is also potentially aimed at students with a background in biology, medicine, and other STEM disciplines, interested in pursuing research topics specific to the cognitive and behavioral sciences. In particualr, the main topics are:

Computational and cognitive neuroscience
Psycholinguistics and neuroscience of language
Neurobiology of memory and learning
General psychophysiology and sleep
Experimental psychology and psychophysics
Perception, attention and awareness
Motor cognition
Neuroscience of emotions and decision-making
Psychometry and quantitative models
Neurocognitive development
Advanced neuroimaging and neurostimulation methods

The course is highly innovative for integrating of different disciplines and because it focuses on theoretical and practical training of excellence, which includes the synergies of international networks established by UniSR as well as the experience of foreign university teachers with high-level specialized training.

Admission to one of the Curricula of the PhD Course follows a two-stage comparative evaluation procedure: - Evaluation of candidates’ qualification - Interview. For the purposes of the final ranking up to 60 points can be given in the first assessment phase to the candidates’ qualifications and up to 40 points can be given instead during the second assessment phase. Candidates with a final score lower than 60% of the total score (100 points) will be considered non-eligible.

8 positions with fellowships:

- 4 tree-years free fellowships
- 4 project-based fellowships.

The yearly amount of the fellowship is €18,000.00, subject to the INPS [Italian Social Security] separate management contribution, according to the regulations in force.
The total fellowship duration is three years. However, it is renewed yearly upon successful completion of the annual examination.
All the PhD students (including those without a fellowship) may apply for a budget for periods of research to be carried out abroad.
Each year, all PhD students are granted a budget amount to at least 10% of the fellowship.

Una solida esperienza di ricerca in campi multidisciplinari della psicologia e delle scienze cognitive può avere una grande ricettività a livello di istituzioni e aziende che operano nel settore.
L'obiettivo primario e generale del corso e` la preparazione di giovani ricercatori da avviare alla carriera accademica, negli enti di ricerca e nelle diverse istituzioni pubbliche e private, in ambito sia nazionale sia internazionale. Un potenziale inserimento in un ambito non accademico o di ricerca è un’opzione aggiuntiva per quelle aree che richiedono competenze di scienze cognitive in un contesto multidisciplinare.
Nell’ambito accademico, chi ottiene il Dottorato in Scienze Cognitive e Comportamentali potrà partecipare a concorsi di Ricercatore Universitario a Tempo Determinato. Potrà inoltre diventare un Ricercatore in altri enti di ricerca pubblici o privati, nell'ambito sia della ricerca di base che di quella applicata. Oltre alle possibilità accademiche e di ricerca, sbocchi occupazionali a livello aziendale e industriale sono possibili in tutti i campi in cui le risposte alle domande poste dalle scienze cognitive sono rilevanti, come ad esempio nell’analisi del comportamento, dell'intelligenza artificiale, nell’interazione uomo-macchina, oltre che in campi dove è centrale l’analisi di dati multidimensionali. E` prevista anche la possibilità della libera professione come consulente.
