Course contents

Objectives
The Master Degree in Applied Mathematics aims at providing high-level competences for the formalization and the consequent mathematical analysis of problems arising from applied sciences and technologies, with a special focus on the analysis of big data systems and complex systems.

Courses
The program provides courses which complete the basic mathematical competences, covering all the main areas of Mathematics (Mathematical Logic, Algebra, Geometry, Mathematical Analysis, Mathematical Physics, Statistics, Numerical Analysis, Optimizations, Foundations of Mathematics). Then, the student can select courses focused in areas where the support of advanced mathematical methods is fundamental in recent scientific researches and developing technologies. These courses cover topics such as the theory of formal languages, discrete methods in Mathematics, the applications of data analysis, bioinformatics and information systems for understanding structures in big data systems and networks, techniques for modeling, analyzing and simulating complex dynamic systems, discrete event systems and nonlinear control systems. The training is aimed at developing skills that the student can employ for the interaction with specialists in the scientific and technological areas where the support of advanced mathematical tools is required. The acquired competencies include the ability of retrieving methodological information from the advanced mathematical literature. Students interested in Education can complete the program with courses focused in the foundational and educational aspects of Mathematics.

Internship and international opportunities
The Department of Information Engineering and Mathematics has a long record of collaborations at both academic and industrial level. This provides the students with the opportunity of spending one semester either in qualified universities and research institutions, within student exchange programs, or doing an internship at companies or research labs in the areas of complex system modelling and data analysis.

Possono accedere al Corso di Laurea Magistrale in Applied Mathematics tutti coloro che soddisfano i seguenti requisiti curriculari.

Si richiede il possesso di ALMENO UNO dei seguenti titoli di studio:

a) Laurea nella classe L35 (Scienze Matematiche) o nella classe L-32 ex dm 509/99.

b) Laurea in una delle seguenti classi ex D.M.270/04 (o nelle equivalenti classi ex D.M.509/99, il cui numero è riportato a fianco tra parentesi, insieme al nome ove questo sia diverso):

congiuntamente all'aver conseguito un numero minimo di CFU nei settori MAT/xx, definito nel Regolamento Didattico del Corso di Studi.

Per gli studenti il cui titolo di studio è stato rilasciato da una università straniera, la valutazione del possesso dei requisiti curriculari è demandata al Comitato per la Didattica, il quale verifica in particolare:
- che il titolo sia rilasciato al termine di un corso di studi di durata almeno triennale;
- che gli studi seguiti siano adeguati rispetto ai requisiti delle classi di laurea sopra indicate.

L'ammissione al corso di studi, per gli studenti in possesso dei requisiti curriculari, è subordinata alla verifica del possesso di adeguati requisiti di qualità, secondo le modalità definite nel Regolamento Didattico del Corso di Studio. In tale valutazione dovrà essere accertata la conoscenza della lingua inglese al livello almeno B2 del Quadro di riferimento delle lingue del Consiglio d'Europa.

The graduate in Applied Mathematics can find jobs in public institutions, private companies and research centers, which make use of advanced mathematical methods for the modeling and the analysis of data and networks. More specifically, the areas of interest for the competences of mathematical specialists are those connected with financial data analysis, control and optimization of biological data systems, analysis and control of networks and information systems, image processing and cryptography, modeling of general patterns for artificial intelligence and man-machine integrated systems.
The graduate in Applied Mathematics can access PhD programs in Mathematics, and also in the areas of Economics, Technologies and Natural Sciences, especially where the PhD program requires a solid background of mathematical competences. The graduate in Applied Mathematics can access the graduate courses which enable a career in educational institutions.
