Course contents

Currently, information is increasingly considered as a resource, due to the fundamental role it plays in carrying out the processes of an organization, whether it is involved in producing goods or providing services. In particular, territorial information plays a central role in the institutional activities of various public bodies and it is increasingly necessary to use adequate IT tools both for the management of the data and as a support for decisions. For this reason, the proposal of an "Introduction to G.I.S. (Geographic Information System) ”can be interesting as it introduces the basic concepts useful for correctly managing spatial data. The course, in fact, intends bring the participants closer to the (complex but extremely stimulating) issue of Geographic Information Systems, which in recent years is becoming increasingly important and widespread, thanks also to the potential of the hardware tools available today to manage the information itself. Through a theoretical training course necessarily synthetic but enriched by numerous practical exercises, the basic concepts of geodesy, cartography and databases will be provided and the main foundations of the Geographic Information System (GIS) and the tools to allow the creation, will be introduced, editing and georeferencing of spatial data. The notions related to the use of tabular data (join and relate) and the main operators of spatial analysis, the creation of thematic maps, the creation of spatial and alphanumeric queries, up to develop a complete project of an urban planning tool, starting from the data analysis that allows you to make design choices consistent with current legislation.
